Miguel Vieira de Castro
Port of Sines– Portugal
Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1967 and the proud father of three sons.
In 1990 I started my career at sea as second Officer on general cargo, Ro-Ro and bulk carrier vessels. I quickly became Chief Officer on VLCCs and LPGs and when the opportunity arose to become Harbour Pilot, I did not hesitate.
Currently, I serve as a Harbour Pilot in largest port in Portugal, Sines which handles more than 50% of the country’s cargo, where I perform duties as Senior Pilot maneuvering all types of vessels without restrictions.
Since September 2013, besides being a Pilot I’m also a Lecturer at the Portuguese Nautical Academy, teaching Port and Maritime Technology, Maritime Safety and Stowage Systems at the MSc and BSc degrees, a consultant in technical and safety matters and internal auditor on ISO 9001, 14001 and OSHAS 18001.
I’m also a member of the port’s task force on sustainability, alternative fuels and energy transition, where in the past eight years I’ve been attending and addressing several conferences and workshops .
